Last Wednesday, May 19, our sixth graders took their last English class of the school year, and we commemorated the occasion by dressing up as characters from the poems, stories and books we read together in class. Our students used their creativity to transform themselves into characters from Isaac Asimov’s “The Fun They Had”, Lewis Carroll’s “The Walrus and the Carpenter” and Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet. We also had various students dressed up as baseball legend Jackie Robinson, as we read an excerpt from his autobiography I Never Had It Made. Some students dressed up as Japanese characters inspired by Jerry Stanley’s I Am an American: A True Story of Japanese Internment. Others dressed up as characters from our Vocabulary Workshop, and one student dressed up as the book itself! A scary Jabberwocky wandered the hallways, making Lewis Carroll proud. The last novel we read together, Holes by Louis Sachar, took special prominence among the students. We saw many versions of Stanley Yelnats, Hector “Zero” Zeroni, Mr. Sir and The Warden, played by the teacher. Our students are to be commended for the inventiveness shown in this activity, as well as for their enthusiasm and hard work throughout this challenging year. Read on, Conquistadores! May God bless you.
